Who is Larksong?

Hello, my name is Angela.  We live in Portland, OR.  To loosely quote Rod Dreher, I’m a “birkenstock wearing, organic gardening, thrift store shopping, bird-nerd, homeschooling lactivist mama” who loves loves loves to knit, spin, bake, and do all things crafty with my 2 semi-unschooled daughters and baby boy.

I’ve been married for 8 years to a wonderful man who loves to eat my cooking and puts up with my dressers full of yarn and roving.  I, in turn, wink at his massive board game collection.

Our little ones -

Little Hen – our oldest, 6 ½, a thoughtful, intense little girl with a mothering spirit and a love of chickens, earthworms, babies all things scientific/medical.  She wants to be a doctor and a mama when she grows up.

Firecracker – our spunky second daughter.  She is a boisterous, outgoing, 4 1/2 year-old with the best and loudest laugh you ever heard. She has a dangerous sweet tooth and loves to be my kitchen helper.  She wants to be a superhero/horse farmer/nurse/baker/librarian when she grows up.

Tum-Tum – our mellow, smiley baby boy, born on Memorial Day 2008 – a joy every day.  He was 10 lb 7 oz and birth, and continues to be off the charts.  He’s an easy-going, snuggly guy through and through and he is doted on something awful by his adoring big sisters.

Love your site :) Simple and homey. How did you chose the names of your children?

I stumbled across your website while doing a search on one of my favorite books, which serendipitously has the same name as the title of your blog. I see that there is someone else who likes to take pictures of her feet in lieu of her face. Also, your description of your little hen sounds surprisingly like myself. Down to what she wants to be when she grows up. Interesting. I hope you are enjoying your life.

    Hi Mama,
I didn’t know how else to get hold of you. Could you contact me regarding the contest that I held this past weekend.
    Thanks hon!
By the way…I love your site!!

    Hey Angela!
Thanks for your thoughtful comments on my Quaker-y ramblings. I don’t know if I would exclusively call myself “Quaker”, since I am not even attending a Meetinghouse….but this is the tradition that seems to speak to me the most and can still hold my love for G-d through Judaism… The thing that turned me off the most to the local Meetinghouse communities is that it just seemed like a political activism forum that had co-opted a spiritual tradition. I wish I lived near a L’Abri…I think that L’Abri is such a wonderful example of being willing to ask hard questions, not be forced to conform to a “religious culture” and still hold fast to a Truth (capital T on purpose).
With Quakerism, I don’t even touch the “peace” stuff (peace isn’t just about anti-war activism)…but instead focus on the testimonies of quiet worship, seeking the Light within, and living an uncluttered simple life.
I look forward to chatting with you more…I am going to stick you on my blogroll! (my second one….)
Also..I am going to be copying your Sparrow Post idea, so be on the lookout for pictures…..
