Monthly Archive for August, 2009
We took the children for a quick visit to the Oregon Zoo (the best part of having a pass, in my opinion, is that you can pop in for an hour or two and just see a few things, so the children don’t get maxed-out). This visit, we decided to go with a bird theme [...]
County Fair
Posted in Building Community, Outings on Aug 16th, 2009
Last week we traveled north to Ridgefield, WA for the Clark County Fair. The kids’ aunt and uncle, niece, grandparents, and great-grandparents met us there for an afternoon full of livestock viewing, carnival rides, and ridiculously unhealthy food.
All of the kids enjoyed the hula-hooping contest, and my niece (with the white ribbon in her hair) [...]

Yesterday’s thrifting yielded these three child-sized wooden dishes (Other finds – two prairie bonnets for the girls for 75 cents each, and an April Cornell baby dress for a friend’s little girl for $1.50! I also picked up a like-new Maya Wrap for $2, but it’s a size M and a bit short for my [...]
Egg-dyed yarns
Posted in Crafting, Knitting, Moderation and Economy, Spinning on Aug 13th, 2009
I have always wanted to dye my own roving (mostly because of the Twisted Sisters Sock Book!!), but wanted it to be something the children and I could do together – something safe, easy, and non-toxic. So, when I was pregnant with my son, the girls and I dyed 2 lbs of white Brown Sheep [...]
Off the spindle
Posted in Spinning on Aug 11th, 2009
With the cooler weather of the last few days, we’ve found life has slowed down a bit, and we’ve been hanging around the house more and more. The girls have been playing more quiet games, and we’ve all been reading through our latest haul from the library. I’ve gotten a chance to finish spinning [...]
Orange Julius Recipe
Posted in Changing Seasons, From my kitchen, Outings on Aug 9th, 2009
To make this refreshing, healthy summertime snack , you will first need 4 medium oranges. Give them to the kids and let them roll the oranges around on the counter and between their hands to prep them for juicing.
Juice the oranges (you should get about 1 cup of orange juice). If little hands are [...]

The raspberries are all done for the year, the mint bolted in the heat, but the tomatoes and green beans are in full production! There were even some carrots and a new patch of basil [...]

Morning on the Farm

Some more shots from yesterday’s trip to Sauvie Island Farms.
Little Hen in the raspberry canes,
where we found an old abandoned nest, lined with feathers and seed fluff.
Firecracker helped her auntie pick blueberries.
And the flowers were absolutely stunning.
The biggest surprise of the day was finding a nest with four baby birds in the middle of the [...]
